Increasing Flood Resilience
For Agricultural Buildings

Aim of the guidance document

The RFRP have developed this document to deliver the following action in the RFRP’s work plan:

“The creation of guidance and advice for farm businesses on how to increase their flood resilience by implementing Property Flood Resilience measures.”

This guidance has been created by compiling information collected during visits to several farm businesses, alongside relevant existing flood resilience guidance.

The guidance supports farmers to increase the flood resilience of their farmstead through chapters focusing on the following activities:

Preparedness | actions you can take to prepare for a flood.

Planning for Property Flood Resilience | describing the steps to take as you explore the suitable flood resilience measures for your farm buildings.

Resistance | keeping as much water out of the buildings as possible using measures such as flood barriers, self-closing airbricks and non-return valves.

Recoverability | measures making internal adaptations, such as having resilient flooring, raised electrics and chemicals, so if water does enter the property, it causes as little damage as possible.

Reducing the risk | measures reducing water runoff by retaining and improving drainage at the property level through, for instance, encouraging permeable surfaces and rainwater harvesting.
